Black sports history fact #17

In 1896, John Shippen became the first African-American to play in the U.S. Open. He began the second day of the event tied for first place (just to show how good this guy was).  He had a horrible stroke of luck that began when his drive landed in a sand trap. He took eleven strokes to complete the 13th hole.
