NBA G League Introduces New Experimental Rules for 2024-25 Season

The NBA G League is rolling out several experimental rules for the upcoming 2024-25 season, providing a testing ground for potential NBA rule changes. These unique modifications aim to refine gameplay and enhance both the pace and strategy of the game.

End-of-Period “Heaves”: Missed long-distance shots within the last three seconds of the first three quarters will now count as team field goal attempts, rather than individual misses, if they meet specific distance and backcourt criteria.

Expanded Coach’s Challenge: Teams will now have two challenges per game, with most called fouls and violations being reviewable, except for technical, unsportsmanlike, and flagrant fouls. Teams will still be charged a timeout for each challenge.

Target Score Overtime: Overtime games will now end when a team reaches a Final Target Score, determined by adding seven points to the tied score at the end of regulation.

Other Notable Changes: New rules include a single free throw worth up to three points in most situations, a 14-second shot clock reset on advances, and modified transition take foul rules.

These experimental rules will give fans and teams a glimpse into possible future changes in the NBA itself.
