When you think about the most iconic teams in modern NBA history—those polarizing, impactful teams that shaped society far beyond the game itself—who comes to mind? A few obvious choices would be the Golden State Warriors of recent years, the Kobe and Shaq Lakers of the early 2000s, and of course, the Chicago Bulls of the ’90s.
The torch has been passed, with the Steph-Klay-Draymond Warriors entering a new chapter. But who is next in line to carry it? Is it the Boston Celtics, with their championship pedigree and a young, though less polarizing, core? Or could it be the Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, or even the Minnesota Timberwolves that step up to the challenge?
I’ll throw in a sleeper pick: the Oklahoma City Thunder. They’re trending upward and projected to be a top contender in the Western Conference, with a real shot at making the NBA Finals. The Thunder have all the makings of the next cornerstone NBA franchise, not just because of their recent success and trajectory, but due to their diverse, dynamic personalities—each one captivating in its own right.
From Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s calm, cool, and collected demeanor to Jalen Williams’ quirky vibe (shoutout to Alex Caruso for the proclamation) and whatever “cool kid” thing Chet Holmgren’s got going on, this team is a melting pot of personalities. And I haven’t even mentioned Jaylin Williams, whose smile might be the most contagious in the league.
This team is set up to be dynastic.
With six players ranked in the NBA’s top 100, according to CBS Sports, the Thunder could produce an MVP candidate, a Most Improved Player candidate, multiple All-Stars, and might even snag a Sixth Man of the Year award to go along with the reigning Coach of the Year.
Of course, the NBA is unpredictable. In today’s game, players sticking with one team throughout their career is a rarity, so everything I’m saying could change with a single transaction. But as of today, the Oklahoma City Thunder have a real shot at becoming the league’s next iconic basketball team.
