On Wednesday afternoon, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey was exonerated from charges following a thorough police investigation into allegations of an improper relationship with an underage girl. While Giddey has been legally cleared, he remains under the NBA’s scrutiny regarding allegations of an improper relationship with a minor.
Despite the closure of the Newport Beach PD’s investigation without charges against the 21-year-old player, sources indicate that the NBA’s stance remains unchanged. Giddey finds himself still under the watchful eye of his employer, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the league’s review into the allegations.
“After a thorough and exhaustive examination, we have completed our investigation into information that was circulating on social media involving Josh Giddey,” Newport Beach PD said in a statement.
“Our detectives have reviewed all of the available information and were unable to corroborate any criminal activity related to Mr. Giddey.”
The investigation, initiated in November, scrutinized claims that surfaced over Thanksgiving weekend. Social media erupted with serious allegations against the 21-year-old Giddey, featuring photos and videos depicting interactions with a girl believed to be a high school junior at the time.
Despite the gravity of the accusations, officials concluded that there was no supporting evidence to substantiate the claims. The case came to a close as no parties involved were willing to provide additional information, leaving Giddey in the clear.
This turn of events marks a resolution to a challenging period for Giddey, who can now focus on his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder without the shadow of legal concerns which includes the NBA, who, decided to “take a backseat” to law enforcement.
Throughout the probe, Giddey, who has not publicly addressed the allegations, continued to play for the Thunder. However, he faced jeers from opposing fans on multiple occasions.
Giddey, in his third NBA season, has averaged 11.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 24.8 minutes per game for the Thunder.
