The television show “Area 21” has become an increasingly popular show that features some of the league’s best players, both current and former. Monday night, that great Celtic team from 2008 that won the NBA title came on as guests on the show. They touched on plenty of topics, mostly controversial topics like discussing Ray Allen’s absence. The most intriguing topic had to do with Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook’s damaged friendship.
Former Thunder big man Kendrick Perkins made a few comments:
“Believe it or not, though, I was trying to figure out a way to make them talk again. I felt like the outside world was putting a beef there that really wasn’t too serious, you know what I mean? I think the night that Russ actually broke the record, I had text KD the next day. He was talking about something, and he sent me a text and was like ‘Hey, man. Me and Russ had a nice conversation.”‘
Perkins told the story in a way that a man would while sitting on the couch, chatting it up with his boys. Maybe even with a beer. It was still interesting to listen to because Perkins always seems to know what’s going on.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if KD make a little run… I wouldn’t be surprised if he go back to Oklahoma, because in my opinion I don’t think Russ goin’ nowhere.”
Despite Perkins not being the best storyteller in the world, his remarks should be noted. He spent a significant amount of time on this team during the Thunder’s glory days and he’s seen Kevin and Russell’s relationship at its highest and lowest point. In addition, he’s kept a solid relationship with the two throughout.
Kevin and Russell aren’t going to be best friends or anything like that. They actually never were. However, I do think this drama won’t continue much longer. This story may unfold the same way Kobe and Shaq’s did. Not enemies, or friends. Just a mutual respect.
Perkins’ remarks about Durant returning to Oklahoma City probably won’t happen, but I also remember when everyone said LeBron James wouldn’t go back to Cleveland after leaving for South Beach. Don’t be optimistic about that coming true.

Great news and nice story, but no one is as big of a jerk as Coby. You shouldn’t compare Westbrook and Cupcake to Shaq and Coby…
