The highly anticipated 2024-25 Oklahoma City Thunder season took an early hit with the news that newcomer Isaiah Hartenstein would miss the first 5–6 weeks due to a left-hand fracture.
After a 2023–24 season where the Thunder consistently struggled against teams with strong frontcourts, pairing Hartenstein with Chet Holmgren seemed to complete the puzzle—especially with the addition of perimeter defender Alex Caruso.
Despite this setback, the Thunder stayed strong, posting an impressive 11–4 record through their first 15 games without Hartenstein and sharing the top spot in the Western Conference with the Golden State Warriors.
On Wednesday night, in a matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers—featuring bruisers like 7-foot-2 rookie Donovan Clingan and Robert Williams—Hartenstein’s presence was sorely needed. And he delivered.
In his Thunder debut, Hartenstein notched an impressive double-double: 13 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 blocks.
In his debut came something that I didn’t necessarily expect to see: his leadership. While everyone was enthralled with his passing, shot blocking and ability to alter shots on the defensive end, I noticed him talking, coaching better yet, his teammates on the defensive end on multiple possessions.
How will Hartenstein pair with Holmgren when fully integrated? That remains to be seen, but based on tonight’s performance, the Thunder could have one of the league’s best defensive frontcourts.
