Venables announces Seth Littrell and Joe Jon Finley will coordinate offense

Brent Venables made it official on Wednesday that former Sooner players, Seth Littrell and Joe Jon Finley, will be co-offensive coordinators moving forward. The news comes just days after Jeff Lebby informed the Oklahoma staff he would be the new head coach at Mississippi State.

“I’m thrilled to announce two former OU players as our new brain trust on offense,” Brent Venables said. “Seth and Joe Jon are going to make an amazing duo and lead a fantastic group of offensive coaches.”

Littrell will have the lead coordinator role, taking on the duties of being the play-caller and coaching quarterbacks. Finley will keep his role as associate head coach for offense and continue coaching tight ends.

Littrell started his coaching career in 2002. He was an offensive analyst for Oklahoma this season, but he coordinated great offenses at Arizona, Indiana and North Carolina before becoming the head coach at North Texas for seven seasons.

Finley returned to Oklahoma as a graduate assistant in 2012 after a five-year NFL career. He coached tight ends at Missouri in 2016 before leaving for Texas A&M in 2019, where he spent one season, and then joined the Ole Miss coaching staff in 2020. Finley returned to his alma mater in 2021 to become the tight ends coach.

“Yes, this was an easy and convenient move,” Venables said. “But it was also the best move for our program, our players and our staff. I went through a thorough process and vetted and visited with a lot of candidates, including sitting head coaches, former head coaches, NFL assistants, quarterback gurus and others. But everything kept bringing me back to this duo and our offensive staff as a whole.”

We will get the first look at what the offense will look like under new coordination in Oklahoma’s bowl game, which will be announced Sunday.
