Sooners look to keep Big 12 Championship hopes alive vs West Virginia

The No. 17 Oklahoma Sooners (7-2, 4-2 Big 12) look to snap their two-game losing streak against the West Virginia Mountaineers (6-3, 4-2 Big 12) on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 6:00 p.m. (CT).

The two teams are tied for second place in the Big 12 with three other teams, and Oklahoma needs a win to keep them in contention for the conference championship.

Scenarios for OU to make Big 12 championship

Scenario 1

  • Texas loses one of its three remaining games (at TCU, at Iowa State, vs Texas Tech).
  • Kansas loses one of its three remaining games (vs Texas Tech, vs Kansas State, at Cincinnati).
  • Sooners win out (vs West Virginia, at BYU, vs TCU).

Scenario 2

  • Oklahoma State loses two of its three remaining games (at UCF, at Houston, vs BYU).
  • Kansas loses one of its three remaining games (vs Texas Tech, vs Kansas State, at Cincinnati).
  • Sooners win out (vs West Virginia, at BYU, vs TCU).

Both of the scenarios require Kansas to lose another game. Even though they are tied for the third-best record in the conference, Kansas has the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Can OU get back on track?

None of this matters if Oklahoma can’t get things figured out. The Sooners have lost their last two games by a combined eight points.

The biggest factor in those games is the fact that they haven’t done a great job of taking care of the football, committing three turnovers in each game. If Oklahoma can get back to playing clean football by getting rid of the turnovers and penalties, they can finish the season strong.

The Mountaineers are coming in with a lot of confidence. Quarterback Garrett Greene is playing great football, and running backs Jahiem White and CJ Donaldson Jr. both rushed for over 100 yards last week. If the Sooner defense can limit those three and the offense can play mistake-free, I like Oklahoma’s chances.

Prediction

31-17 Oklahoma
