Preview and Staff Predictions: Oklahoma vs Texas

The No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) face the Texas Longhorns (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) in one of the biggest Red River Rivalry matchups in recent memory. Both teams are undefeated going into this game for the first time since 2011, where the Sooners won 55-17.

What to watch for

Who has the edge at quarterback?

Dillon Gabriel vs Quinn Ewers. The matchup that we hoped to see last season, but Gabriel was out with a concussion. Gabriel is off to a fast-start this season, so the Sooners won’t be short-handed at the most important position. Oklahoma faces an elite Longhorn defense that is ranked No. 13 in scoring defense with a very strong defensive line but if given time, Gabriel can really test the Longhorn secondary.

On the other side, Ewers has ten touchdowns to just one interception this season. He has played at an elite level, and Oklahoma’s defense can’t give him a lot of time in the pocket because he will make you pay. I expect Brent Venables to dial up a lot of different blitzes in attempt to confuse the Texas offense.

Line of Scrimmage

Oklahoma offensive lineman McKade Mettauer spoke about Texas’ defensive front. “I think on both sides of offense and defense, the game is gonna be decided on the line of scrimmage,” Mettauer said. “They’re obviously a good defensive line.”

The Longhorn defensive line is a unit, but their offensive line is vulnerable. Oklahoma has a much better pass rush compared to last year, and that is where they could find some success.

However, it might be tough for the Sooners to run the ball on Texas. Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby will have to get a little creative.

Turnover Battle

In big rivalry games like this, one turnover can instantly change the momentum of the game, whether it be an interception, fumble or turnover on downs. Whoever wins the turnover battle probably wins this game, so ball security and smart decisions by each quarterback will be crucial.

Predictions

Tanner Johnson: 31-27 Oklahoma

Addam Francisco: 24-21 Texas

A.J. Bussey: 35-21 Texas

Jonathan Goudeau: 35-20 Texas
