Teams have finally switched from fall camp to game prep, which means the start of the college football season is almost here. With week one being less than two weeks away, here are my preseason standings for the new-look Big 12.
Texas Longhorns
2022-23 results: 8-5 overall, 6-3 Big 12
The Longhorns return nine starters on an offense that scored 34.5 points per game last year. They have a chance to have one of the top offenses in the nation.
Oklahoma Sooners
2022-23 results: 6-7 overall, 3-6 Big 12
Oklahoma’s defense should be much improved this year after getting a lot of help in the transfer portal and recruiting. They also return veteran quarterback Dillon Gabriel.
Kansas State
2022-23 results: 10-4 overall, 7-2 Big 12
The Wildcats return Will Howard at quarterback and one of the best offensive lines in the Big 12. They just need to fill a few holes on defense.
TCU
2022-23 results: 13-2 overall, 9-0 Big 12
The Horned Frogs have a lot of questions on offense after losing Max Duggan.
Texas Tech
2022-23 results: 8-5 overall, 5-4 Big 12
Joey McGuire had a promising first season as the head coach with eight wins in 2022. This might be my sleeper team.
Oklahoma State
2022-23 results: 7-6 overall, 4-5 Big 12
The Cowboys lost a lot to the transfer portal, but the pick up of Alan Bowman was huge. I have a lot of questions about the defense.
Baylor
2022-23 results: 6-7 overall, 4-5 Big 12
Blake Shapen needs to have a much better year at quarterback, and the defense has issues to fix in the secondary.
Kansas
2022-23 results: 6-7 overall, 3-6 Big 12
Jalon Daniels might be the best quarterback in the conference, but he absolutely has to stay healthy.
UCF
2022-23 results: 9-5 overall, 6-2 AAC
UCF will have the best season out of the four new schools. They have a big matchup with the Sooners on Oct. 21.
Iowa State
2022-23 results: 4-8 overall, 1-8 Big 12
The Cyclones might be without quarterback Hunter Dekkers due to an ongoing gambling investigation.
BYU
2022-23 results: 8-5 overall
The schedule for the Cougars might just be the toughest in the conference, including a road trip to play the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Houston
2022-23 results: 8-5 overall, 5-3 AAC
It will be nice to see Dana Holgorsen back in the Big 12, but this team has a lot of questions on the defensive side of the ball.
Cincinnati
2022-23 results: 9-4 overall, 6-2 AAC
Scott Satterfield could have a tough first season as the head coach with just seven returning starters.
West Virginia
2022-23 results: 5-7 overall, 3-6 Big 12
Quarterback play needs to be a lot better. It will come down to Garrett Greene or Nicco Marchiol.
