Black sports history fact #4

Debi Thomas was the first African-American woman to win a medal in Olympic figure skating in 1988, fairly recently huh?

Well in the year I was born 1992, Jair Lynch became the very first African-American man to win an Olympic medal in gymnastics. He won the silver medal in the parallel bars.

Last but not least, Domonique Dawes in 1996 became the first African-American woman to win the gold medal in gymnastics.

These are all great milestones for our people but it’s unbelievable that these milestones weren’t reached earlier in our black American history. It hasn’t even been 30 years. This just shows that we are still overcoming a lot, and there are still milestones for us to reach, even in 2016.
