The Oklahoma Sooners offense has been a big question throughout the season so far.
Sooner fans probably aren’t used to winning games when their offense doesn’t score over 30 points, but that has already happened twice this season.
During the West Virginia game, some “fans” were even calling for preseason Heisman favorite Spencer Rattler to be benched for freshman Caleb Williams. Rattler responded by leading Oklahoma on a final drive that resulted in a game-winning field goal by Gabe Brkic.
Head coach Lincoln Riley also gave his thoughts after the game.
“Iβll tell you what, Spencer and the offense will own what we didn’t do well. We’re not going to shy away from that,” Riley said. “And I’ll tell you what, it takes a lot of balls to do what we did there at the end, so people better see that too.β
However, it looked like the offense started to find its stride in the 37-31 win at Kansas State.
Behind much improved offensive line play, Rattler played his best game of the year thus far. He finished 22-for-25, throwing for 243 yards and two touchdowns. I’m not saying the pass protection was perfect. The Sooners still allowed two sacks, but they gave Rattler more time than in previous games to make plays and keep drives alive.
On top of that, the Sooners were finally able to get a solid rushing attack going. OU rushed for 131 yards (4.1 per carry) and two touchdowns. Kennedy Brooks had one of those touchdowns on the ground. He rushed for 91 yards on 15 carries.
The offense still has a long way to go, but it was good to see them trending in the right direction heading into a huge Red River Showdown where College Gameday will be live. Spencer Rattler will need to perform in front of one of the wildest atmospheres in college football.
“We took a step of where we want to go and kind of had a statement game,” Rattler said. “And (we) didn’t even play near to what we should have.”
