Tiger Woods puts his five-year tournament drought to bed after winning his first PGA Tour since 2013 on Sunday afternoon at East Lake Golf Course in Georgia.
Woods finished 11 under par, two strokes ahead of fellow American Billy Horschel, who finished second in the tournament.
The story of Tigers win (other than his spectacular play during the tournament), was the crowd, especially during the final hole. A plethora of fans followed as Tiger approached the green and hit his way out of a sand trap. He had an opportunity for a birdie but missed left by a few inches, eventually having to settle for par.
With Tiger being two shots ahead of Horschel, that was good enough to secure the win. The fans that surrounded the final hole, lost it. The peaceful sport that is golf turned into a football-like environment as Woods raised both hands in victory.
It was just a grind out there, and I loved every bit of it,” said Tiger after being asked what he proved to himself. “At the beginning of the year, certainly, that was a tall order. But as the year progressed, and I proved that I could play, I found a swing and put the pieces together. And, I knew I could do it again.”
Tiger’s interview was interrupted by loud “TIGER” chant behind him and it nearly moved the golf great to tears. This is Tiger’s 80th victory and from the looks of it, Tiger Woods is back.
