Sooners Go Up 1-0 In World Series After Historically Long Game

Oklahoma-Florida was expected to be a highly entertaining game. The Sooners are the defending national champions, but the Gators are the No. 1 seed in the tournament. No matter how both of these teams played during the regular season, it doesn’t matter. Game 1 of the final series showed how close these two teams are. The 17-inning, almost six-hour game ended with Oklahoma getting the last laugh, defeating Florida 7-5.

Here are some intriguing numbers that came from the longest game in championship series history.

496: Combined pitches thrown by two Gators and two Sooners.

21: Combined hits by both teams.

5 hours and 28 minutes: From the first pitch to the final out.

102: Total outs between both teams.

31: Players involved between both teams.

40: Combined strikeouts between the four pitchers.

3: RBIs on Shay Knighten’s homer in the 17th that won it for Oklahoma.

2: Starting pitchers (Kelly Barnhill and Paige Lowary) who re-entered the game.

Start time for Game 2 will be at 7:07 CT in Oklahoma City. 

Note: The team that wins Game 1 has a 75 percent chance of winning the series. They’ve won 9-of-12 national championships.
