Coming into this season no one thought about Dak Prescott having even the slightest chance of getting significant playing time during his rookie season. Through just three preseason games, Dak’s veteran-like composure and decision making on the field has fans jumping on his bandwagon, assuming that he’s potentially the future of the franchise.
Dak may be the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys for a large portion of the 2016-2017 season.
As many know, Tony Romo can’t stay healthy. As he’s aged, so has his body and he’s just…well, fragile. There’s no way to fix that, time just appeared to catch up with the 14-year veteran.
The problem last season came after Romo injured his collarbone again. At 3-1 these Cowboys looked like a team that could possibly play in the Super Bowl, but things quickly declined immediately after Romo’s injury. The team went 1-11 through the remainder of the season after implementing multiple quarterbacks into the starting role. Long story short, they obviously didn’t play up to expectations and the team went into the offseason knowing their biggest need was a backup quarterback.
Eventually, not early in the first round, but in the fourth, Dallas drafted Prescott. In three preseason games, Prescott has thrown for 454 yards with a sky-high completion percentage. His decision making, toughness, uncanny leadership ability and most of all, the talent that he displayed at Mississippi State parlayed over to the professional level thus far.
So, with that being said, is it time for Romo to help head coach Jason Garrett out by taking a backseat role to Prescott? Just three plays into the third preseason game of the season in Seattle, Romo went running on a play, got tackled and left the game for good with a sore back.
Should Tony’s role on this team transition to solely educating Dak on becoming an even better NFL quarterback?
This may be a little premature but considering last season’s hardships due to a Romo injury makes it a valid question. Tony is now 36 years old and clearly not a healthy 36. Instead of playing out the remainder of Romo’s suspected injury-riddled career, sacrificing entire seasons and what-not, Dallas should look towards the future and ease Dak into the starting role.
It also helps when there’s a league leading offensive line blocking for him and some of the most explosive offensive weapons in the league, with an even more explosive running back in rookie Ezekiel Elliot surrounding him. In this offense, the transition couldn’t be any easier.
It’s time for a change in Dallas and from what everyone has seen thus far, Dak Prescott is the future at quarterback.
